It’s Probably Time to Clean Your Mattress for a Better Night’s Sleep
What is the dirtiest place in your home? It could be your mattress. In fact, when was the last time you gave it a deep cleaning? He’s with you always Did you give a good review? If not, it may affect the quality of sleep you get.
Unless your mattress is really old — in which case, you should replace it — chances are a good cleaning can really help. The Sleep Foundation recommends that you clean your mattress every six months, not counting any stain treatments from spills and the like. Keeping it clean can help extend the life of your mattress, which is good news for you, as mattresses can be expensive.
We will tell you how to clean your mattress effectively to get the most out of it. For more, here are 12 tips to make your mattress last longer. And, here’s why mattress size matters.
How a dirty mattress can affect your sleep
If you’ve been sleeping on a dirty mattress, you may notice a stuffy or runny nose in the morning, as well as watery eyes. This could be your particular allergy, and it could be from dirty bedding.
Your allergies may be aggravated by dust mites living in your mattress or mold spores that can grow when you sweat regularly. To prevent allergy symptoms from getting worse, clean your mattress ASAP and consider setting up an air purifier in your bedroom.
How to deep clean your mattress
Once you’ve removed the sheets and mattress cover, if you have one, you’ll want to vacuum your mattress to remove dust, dead skin cells and any dust mites that may be present. Use your vacuum cleaner attachment to get into all the corners and seams of your mattress.
Next, check for any stains on your mattress and treat them with a mixture of detergent and warm water. Put about half a tablespoon of detergent (either dish soap or laundry detergent will work) into a spray bottle with warm to hot water and shake to combine – you can also use white vinegar and water. Then, spray the stain and let the mixture soak for about 10 minutes before using a cold, damp washcloth to cover the area — a white washcloth is best, if you have one, to prevent color transfer. (Upholstery cleaner can also help with the job.) Repeat until the stain is gone.
After you have taken care of the stains, take some baking soda and sprinkle it all over your mattress. This will help remove any unpleasant odors from your bed, whether it’s from sweat or body oils. This part will take the longest because you’ll want to let it sit for 24 hours to get a deep clean. Of course, that means you’ll probably need to sleep on the couch or in your guest room all night.
Now that the baking soda has sat for about 24 hours, it’s time to clean your mattress again. Your mattress should now be clean, and you can add the finishing touches if you like. Lightly mist with Febreze or spritz a combination of essential oils and water on it — just don’t saturate the mattress.
Make sure you give your sheets and mattress cover a good wash, too.
How to keep a mattress clean
Now that you’ve deep cleaned your mattress, you’ll want to keep it protected until it’s time to clean it again in six months. Start by investing in a good mattress cover or mattress pad and wash them regularly — about once a month. Also, wash your sheets at least once every two weeks — more if you sweat a lot while sleeping.
Also, keep food and drinks in the kitchen and avoid eating or drinking while sleeping. Yes, we know that coffee tastes better in bed, but if you spill it, you’ll have to move your cozy time to the sofa.
