Amazon workers are planning to strike between Black Friday and Cyber Monday in several countries, including the US
Amazon workers in more than 20 countries, including the US, plan to strike during the busy pre-Christmas shopping days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to “pay back Amazon,” strike organizers said Thursday.
“Days of Resistance” aims to “hold Amazon accountable for it [labor] torture, environmental destruction and threats to democracy,” according to organizers UNI Global Union and Progressive International.
“No matter how much they spend fighting us, companies like Amazon cannot cut off the power of our workers to stand together,” said UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman in a statement shared with FOX Business. “In Germany, ver.di has led the charge for more than ten years, demanding collective bargaining rights – a fight that has spread throughout the world. From India to the United States, the UK to Canada, workers are rising up against exploitation and intimidation by companies. ‘Do it -Amazon Pay Day’ is a powerful testament to our unity and our drive. No company – no matter how rich – can silence the cause of workers who want justice.

Countries with striking workers include the US – where workers will go on strike in “major cities” – the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Brazil, India and Turkey, organizers said.
The striking workers will be supported by various unions, anti-poverty organizations and garment workers’ rights and others, according to the UNI Global Union.

Amazon, in a statement to FOX Business, accused the editors of “intentionally misleading” and promoting a “false story.”
“The truth is, at Amazon we offer great pay, great benefits, and great opportunities — all from day one,” said Amazon spokeswoman Eileen Hards. “We’ve created more than 1.5 million jobs worldwide, and counting, and we provide a modern, safe, and inclusive workplace whether you work in an office or in one of our office buildings.”

Organizers said this will be their fifth year of a strike against Amazon at the start of the holiday shopping season.
Specifically, in New Delhi, India, the UNI Global Union said hundreds of Amazon workers “will rally to demand fair treatment given Amazon’s mistreatment of workers during last July’s massive heat wave.”

“[Jeff] “Bezos’ company has spent countless millions to prevent workers from organizing, but the strikes and protests happening around the world show that the workers’ desire for justice – for union representation – will not be stopped,” said Hoffman. Amazon treats its workers well, respects basic rights, and stops undermining targeted programs to protect us all. ‘Make Amazon Pay Day’ is becoming a global act of resistance to Amazon’s abuse of power.”
It is unclear how many workers in the US or abroad are planning to strike.
