American Airlines is using new technology to embarrass boarders
American Airlines has a new strategy for cutting boarding lines: The loud beeper.
CNBC reports that the airline is rolling out a system that sounds two beeps when a passenger tries to board the plane before their boarding team is called.
As of Wednesday, the new technology was at more than 100 airports in the US following trials at Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Tucson International Airport.
CNBC notes that some airlines have tried small, well, sensible ways to prevent gate congestion, which can disrupt the boarding process for fliers who pay a premium to get early boarding. United, for example, texts customers when it’s time to board, offers a countdown clock through its iOS app, and has digital signage that shows which boarding group has been called.
