Boxing results: Jaime Munguia Stops Erik Bazinyan
Jaime Munguia stopped the then undefeated Erik Bazinyan in the tenth round of the fight on Friday night at the Desert Diamond Arena, Glendale, Arizona.
The former WBO junior middleweight champion, now ranked WBC No. 2 and WBC Silver super middleweight champion Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) defeated WBO #2 and NABF Super 168-lb champion Bazinyan (32-1-1, 23 KOs) in 2:36 in the tenth round of a scheduled 12 round.
In the first round, both used their jabs, and Munguia came up. One minute into the round, Bazinyan landed on Munguia’s chin. In the final seconds Munguia landed a right to the chin but it was Bazinyan’s round.
In the second round, it was the same again, with Bazinyan facing Munguia. In the third round, the jabbing continued for both. At the last minute, Bazinyan landed a right to the chin. Munguia did enough to take the round.
In the fourth round, Bazinyan landed a jab, Munguia looking to earn his right with little success. Bazinyan used his jab to prevent Munguia from landing any good rights, taking another fifth round.
In the middle of the sixth hour, Mnguia started to go down well. Both continued with Bazinyan using the jab and Munguia throwing power punches. In the middle of the seventh round, Munguia landed a lot of punches. In the last minute, Bazinyan came back well, blocked by a left but a right to the chin.
In the eighth round, halfway through, Bazinyan landed a good chin. In the last minute, Munguia destroyed Bazinyan, taking the round. It went back and forth in the ninth round, both rights landing in the middle. In the last minute, when Munguia seemed to be out of breath, he finished strongly.
In the tenth round, Munguia landed a left to the chin and a right to the head, knocking Bazinyan down as referee Thomas Taylor stopped him.
Olympic Silver Medalist and NABF junior southpaw champion Richard Torrez, Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) won by DQ over Joey Dawejko (28-12-4, 16 KOs) at 2:02 of the fifth round scheduled for eight rounds.
In the first round, the southpaw Torrez kept using a jab that landed a lot of the time. After a minute, he went to the body of Dawejko, who was on the guard blocking several punches. In the second round a minute later Dawejko landed his first hard left punch to the body. At the last minute, Torrez landed a combination on the chin.
In the third round, Dawejko turned south, and Torrez took a jab. In the fourth round, Dawejko spat, and was stripped of a point by referee Wes Melton.
In the fifth round, Dawejko landed a left to the chin. Then, again, the gag came off, and referee Melton sent Dawejko off.
Light welterweight Emiliano Vargas (12-0, 10 KOs) defeated Larry Fryers (13-7-1, 5 KOs) at 1:23 of the fifth round of a scheduled eight round bout.
In the final seconds of the first round, Vargas hurt Fryers with a left to the chin on the bar. In the second round, Fryers showed his heart coming forward, against Vargas. In the third round, Vargas bloodied Fryers’ nose, punched him, and took another round.
In the fourth round, Vargas continued to battle the ever-present Fryer, who was injured late on.
In the fifth round, Vargas’ hook went to the body, and a chin and floor landed Fryers, as referee Raul Caiz, Jr. blow it without counting. Later, Vargas said he injured his right hand early in the round.
Super featherweight 2016 Olympian Charly Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) knocked out Jorge Castaneda (17-4, 13 KOs) at 2:22 of the third round of a scheduled ten round bout.
In the final seconds of the first round, Suarez rocked Castaneda with a leading right followed by a left to the chin and nearly went down. In the second round, a short Suarez got the better of Castaneda.
In the third round, Castaneda’s right eye began to swell. Suarez landed a hook to the chin, dropping Castaneda in the 8 count of referee Chris Flores. Seconds later, Suarez landed a right followed by a left to the chin, and Castaneda went down for the count.
Junior middleweight Jorge Garcia Perez (30-4, 25 KOs) stopped Ilias Essaoudi (22-2 (15 KOs)) at 0:46 of the first round of the scheduled ten rounds.
In the first round, Perez countered Essaoudi’s miss with a right uppercut to midsection, followed by three punches to the head as Essaoudi fell to the canvas, taking a full count on referee Wes Morton’s knee.
Super bantamweight Sebastian ‘Logan’ Hernandez Reyes (17-0, 16 KOs) stopped Yonfrez Parejo (24-7-1, 12 KOs) after four rounds of the scheduled eight rounds.
In the final seconds of the second round, Hernandez hurt Parejo with a body right. In the third round, Parejo received his fourth warning from referee Chris Flores.
In the fourth round Hernandez continues a good body attack of uppercuts while Parejo gets another catch warning. Parejo’s corner called for a stoppage after the round.
Lightweight Alan Garcia (14-1, 11 KOs) was upset by a knockout of Ricardo Fernandez (16-13, 2 KOs) at 2:25 of the fifth round of the scheduled eight rounds.
In the first four rounds, Garcia had the edge, mostly to the body. In the fifth round, Garcia, against the ropes, landed a southpaw as Fernandez landed on the chin. Garcia landed on his back, referee Raul Caiz, Jr. sunny outside.
Lightweight southpaw Demier Zamora (14-0, 9 KOs) defeated Gerardo Perez (12-6-1, 3 KOs) by eight unanimous decisions.
In the first two rounds, Zamora had his way, beating Perez with his fists. In the third round, Perez drove Zamora into the ropes. From the fourth to the sixth, both had their moments, Zamora getting better.
This game continued in the seventh round. In the eighth and final round, Zamora went to the body, and Perez fought back.
Referee Thomas Taylor. Scored 80-72 twice and 79-73.
Super flyweight southpaw Steven Navarro (4-0, 3 KOs) knocked out Oscar Arroyo (3-3, 2 KOs) at 2:35 of the third round of the scheduled six rounds after scoring two knockdowns.
In the first round after a minute Navarro dropped Arroyo with a left followed by a right to the chin with an 8 count by referee Chris Flores.
In the final seconds, Navarro hurt Arroyo with a right hook, knocking him down a few steps. In the final seconds of the second round, Navarro landed a right followed by a left to the chin, and Arroyo landed another 8 count from referee Flores.
In the third round, Navarro continues to switch from southpaw to orthodox. In the final seconds, Navarro rocked Arroyo with a straight left and knocked him off his defense by crashing into the ropes when referee Flores stopped the fight.
