Is Bluesky down? Another Twitter crash during Elon Musk’s X launch

Bluesky appeared to crash on Thursday amid a surge in users as they apparently fled Elon Musk’s X/Twitter.

Another Twitter status page said some programs went down around 5:15 pm ET. Down Detector saw a slight spike in reports during the same period.

It is not yet clear how widespread this issue is, but the app was not loading for me on both the desktop and the app on my phone. When I went to a site or app all I got was a spinning circle, like it was trying to load. Down Detector showed a big spike in problem reports earlier Thursday.

Perhaps it is expected that Bluesky will have problems. Amid Musk’s heightened support for President-elect Donald Trump, many users are making the Bluesky migration. It has soared to the top of Apple’s App Store, adding nearly 100,000 users a day since last week’s poll.

With all that extra traffic, it may come as no surprise that Bluesky will have growing pains.
