In an epic and bizarre movie scene on September 18 in Texas, a police robot is called in to help a criminal who has locked himself in a motel room… and the results may change crime fighting forever.
A police robot was called to help defeat a criminal who had locked himself in a motel room
In Lubbock, Texas, police responded to the Days Inn where they encountered Felix Delarosa, a 39-year-old man wanted by authorities for violating his parole by tampering with his surveillance device.
According to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Delarosa had locked the door to her hotel room and refused to cooperate with officers who attempted to arrest her. Police then reported hearing gunshots inside Delarosa’s motel room, prompting them to call in the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team to help end the situation.

While trying to negotiate Delarosa’s surrender, officials say he fired several rounds at the SWAT team in his room. As Delarosa looked out of her motel room window, she was shot by a single round from a SWAT team sniper.
Despite the injuries, Delarosa continued to refuse police pleas to surrender peacefully, prompting the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office to call in a police robot to bring the standoff to a quick and non-fatal end.
Undeterred, the police robot continued forward and attempted to break into the motel room through the window as Delarosa tried to fight it off.
Armed with tear gas, the police robot slowly drove to Delarosa’s motel room. In an attempt to stop the police robot from using tear gas, Delarosa rolled out her hotel room window and threw a bed sheet over the machine, hoping it wouldn’t work.
Undeterred, the police robot continued forward and attempted to break into the motel room through the window as Delarosa tried to fight it off.
After the robot operator was able to remove the bed sheet covering the tear gas, Delarosa’s motel room quickly filled with tear gas, causing Delarosa to escape through the window of her room.
As he was leaving the motel room, Delarosa was stopped by a police robot, which ran over him, pinning him completely to the ground. With Delarosa unable to move, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s SWAT team swooped in and arrested him without incident.
Once Delarosa was secured by police, he was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center for a gunshot wound and injuries from his altercation with the police robot.
He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. According to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, the police incident is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers, and the officer who shot Delarosa has been placed on paid leave.
According to the Texas Department of Justice, in 2017 Delarosa was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance. In April 2022, Delarosa was released from prison and placed on parole.
