Once again New York Magazine or Nuzzi publicly named Kennedy, but many other outlets including CNN and The New York Times he reported that the subject was Kennedy.

In a statement to The Times, Nuzzi revealed that he “had some communication between me and the person who was reporting on him that turned personal” earlier this year.

“I did not directly report on this issue and I did not use it as a source. “The relationship was never physical but had to be disclosed to prevent the appearance of conflict,” said Nuzzi’s statement. “I deeply regret not doing so sooner and I apologize to those I have disappointed, especially my colleagues at the institute. New York.”

Kennedy has been married to actor Hines, 58, since 2014. The couple met in 2004 at a celebrity ski fundraiser in Canada benefiting Kennedy’s Waterkeeper Alliance. Kennedy and Hines remained friends for years. Their exchange in 2010 after Hines finalized her divorce from her ex-husband Paul Young. (Hines and Young share a daughter, Catherine.)

“I saw in the paper that Bobby had divorced her,” Hines recalled The Hollywood Reporter in the January profile. “And I remember thinking, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. We’re going through the same thing.’”

The couple was bitter about their split – Kennedy was previously married to her Mary Richardson Kennedy from 1994 to 2012 again Emily Ruth Black from 1982 to 1994 – at that year’s Waterkeeper Alliance ski fundraiser and “something clicked.”

“I saw him through different eyes,” Hines recalled to the magazine. “It was like, ‘Oh, you’re really good.

He added, “I liked that when we met, we were from two different countries. I liked that he was not in the entertainment business. I loved that you do environmental law. And the Kennedy feature? That didn’t seem so important to me because he wasn’t in politics and his family was very warm and welcoming.”
