PAGASA monitors two tropical cyclones without PAR during Typhoon Nika

As Typhoon Nika affects large parts of Luzon, the weather office is also monitoring two tropical storms outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), one of which is expected to enter during the week.

In a press conference of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday morning, the nearby typhoon PAR has intensified into a Tropical Depression from a low pressure area.

It has sustained winds of up to 45 km/h near the center, with gusts up to 55 km/h. The tropical cyclone is currently located 1,685 km east of Eastern Visayas (11.4°N, 141.2°E) and moving west-northwest at a speed of 35 km/h.

According to PAGASA, the tropical typhoon is expected to approach the eastern side of Visayas and Luzon before moving towards the Taiwan-Japan area.

“Tong tropical depression may be visible in the Philippine Area of Responsibility right now. [This tropical depression has the possibility of entering our Philippine Area of Responsibility this week],” said Aldczar D. Aurelio, PAGASA meteorologist in a press conference.

Mr. Aurelio also said that if tropical depression enters PAR, it will be called ‘Ofel.’

Another typhoon monitored by PAGASA is Tropical Storm Manyi (international name), located 3,555 km east of Central Luzon (15.2°N, 154.8°E) and moving slowly to the east. It is expected to turn westward, towards the Visayas and Southern Luzon.

Most have sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center, with gusts up to 105 km/h.

“Sangaz by seeing the bong pasok (something) played by the Philippine Area of Responsibility [As of now, it is unlikely to enter our Philippine Area of Responsibility],” said Mr. Aurelio.

Meanwhile, in an advisory issued by PAGASA on Monday at 11 am, Typhoon Nika made landfall in Disalag, Aurora, and is now crossing Northern Luzon. It is expected to appear in the west coast of Ilocos Sur on Monday afternoon or evening.

Nika will then move west to northwest over the West Philippine Sea and is forecast to exit PAR on Tuesday morning or afternoon.Edg Adrian A. Eva
