Will Outer Banks’ Topper, Ruthie End Up As A Couple After The Turtle Scene?
Topper’s new girlfriend, Ruthie, did not sit well with him Foreign Banks fans – so what does that mean Austin Northcharacter – and fictional couple – before season 5?
After season 4 ended on Thursday, November 7, North, 26, was told exclusively Us Weekly how the show deliberately questioned Topper’s future with his new love interest (played by Mia Challis).
“Topper is trying to get over his love for Sarah. You’re trying to move forward,” North explained about the chaos of the screen trajectory. “He has a new girlfriend, Ruthie, and she’s probably not a good influence on him. I don’t know if he deserves it but he is trying to move forward.”
Part 1 of season 4 showed Ruthie riding Topper during an argument with the Pogues. After pushing him to inflame the conflict, Topper ended up driving a group of baby turtles unknowingly back into the ocean. The incident caused Kiara (Madison Bailey) — and some viewers — to get emotional, leading to a surprising online backlash against Ruthie.

“I have to remind people watching this show that Ruthie and Topper didn’t look down at the beach and say, ‘There are turtles, let’s go and hit them.’ Furthermore, ‘Let’s drive over there and blow sand on them.’ “Topper didn’t really know what Ruthie was doing at the moment,” North explained. “At the end of the day, the turtle hatching happened and Topper and Ruthie got involved in that and they probably didn’t react in the best way when Kiara came down to the beach and confronted them.”
North could see why the controversial incident didn’t help sell Topper’s relationship with Ruthie.
“Maybe that’s the part that woke up the fans. “But Topper and Ruthie’s intention was not to run into turtles in the beginning,” he said while analyzing the future of this fictional couple together. “[Ruthie is] someone who fits where Topper is right now. He’s in this place where he grew up a lot but he’s attracted to this Ruthie kid — including his recklessness.”
North continued: “Topper tried to just move on [the] straighten and shorten his whole life. After all this pressure from her mother, Ruthie just brings out another side of Topper. A fun and chaotic side that may not be good for him. She seems to be his way of getting over Sara. But I don’t think Ruthie [is] a very good influence on him.”
With Foreign Banks as it’s being renewed for a fifth and final season, North is looking forward to seeing where Topper’s story goes from here, adding, “The set is very unique and unlike anything I’ve ever done. That has a special place in my heart. There is a freedom they give us through creation. They let us develop, bring our own to scenes and work with the writers and director. “
Great producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate again Shannon Burke recently suggest to Foreign Banks a universe that is likely to grow in the future. With fans hoping for a spinoff — or two — North admitted he’d like to see the show expand on Topper’s side of the story.
“This program is special and I am very grateful to be a part of it. It’s always fun to see where they take these actors so that it’s cool to continue the journey one after the other,” he told Us. “I would definitely be open to that. That would make me very happy and I could continue to do other projects on the side. “
North was very happy with the time he spent in it Foreign Banks until now.
“In this show, things can be unpredictable and it made me find out how to just adapt as an actor and save my energy. But I also learned to give 100 percent in these scenes. It’s scary at first to jump onto such a big set with all these people on a Netflix production,” he recalls. “[But everyone involved in the show] it allowed me to be fully committed and confident as a player. It created some really amazing work and I’m going to carry that over to other sets and just feel more confident. I’ve grown a lot as an actor and I’ve learned a lot from these people I’ve worked with.”
He concluded by saying: “I am still learning every day. And whenever I sit, I learn something. I try to include something, whether it’s things behind the camera or in front of it. There is only so much you can learn in an acting class and I learned as much as I could. It was truly a blessing.”
Foreign Banks is currently streaming on Netflix and has been renewed for a fifth and final season.
