A milestone in the development of the Benin textile industry is the recent construction of a textile production center in the south of Cotonou where all the cotton used is certified by CmiA.
AbTF’s chief program officer Gerlind Baz praised the initiative and said: “African textile production is booming, and cotton made in Africa is a major contributor to ensuring that sustainability plays an important role.”
The CmiA standard supports sustainable cotton farming across Africa, accounting for 30% of the continent’s cotton production in 11 countries south of the Sahara and working with 900,000 smallholder farmers.
In Benin, cotton farming has adhered to CmiA standards since 2005. Together with three cotton companies in Benin, AbTF is working on its CmiA and CmiA Organic standards to improve market access for cotton producers and enable people to resist the effects of climate change. while protecting the environment and biodiversity. Globally, the standard has more than 2,700 partners in the textile chain.
During the World Cotton Day celebrations in early October, the AbTF team visited Benin together with GIZ and PAN UK partners to see the impact of the CmiA project.
The group visited the CmiA Organic cotton farms in the Aklampa area, meeting farmers who are part of the Growing Benin’s Organic Cotton Sector project, which improves the living conditions of small farmers and helps them transition to organic practices.
Around 45,500 people are expected to indirectly benefit from the project, coordinated by PAN UK, launched under the leadership of the non-governmental organization OBEPAB (Organisation Béninoise pour la Promotion de l’Agriculture Biologique), and supported both financially and financially by the AbTF and the cotton trading company Paul Reinhart AG.
It is also supported by GIZ as part of the Sub-Saharan Cotton Initiative, with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
