NBA Considers Alternative Format for 2025 All-Star Game
The NBA is considering a different format for the February 2025 All-Star game, in an attempt to revive the defunct event.
Fans have given up on the All-Star game itself, but it looks like the league is still trying new ways to make it more attractive.
“We are looking at different ways for this year’s All-Star Game. So it’s not a traditional game format,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Saturday in Mexico City.
How will this year’s San Francisco event be different? Silver won’t reveal that, but Steph Curry may have some input.
“We had direct conversations with Steph Curry. It’s a home game for him. “I know he’s proud and wants to make sure the players put their best foot forward, so we’re looking at other options,” said Silver. “I think there is no doubt that the players were disappointed in last year’s game. We all want to do a better job providing competition and entertainment for our fans.”
The highlight of last year’s All-Star Weekend was the 3-point shootout between Curry and WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu, and Silver says they’ll bring it back in a different way.
“Sabrina Ionescu is from the Bay Area. Yes, like I said, Steph will be there, and I can’t remember if they made an official commitment or an unofficial commitment, but they know they’re going to do this again. They are looking forward to it,” said Silver. “I think when they came out of the court after the tournament last year, they actually said that we need more than one round to make it even better. So we’re going to do a lot of things.”
The NFL stopped running the Pro Bowl due to lack of competition, as players were concerned about injuries in the exhibition game. It’s down to just skill competitions and flag football.
Silver doesn’t look like he’ll completely quit the All-Star Game just yet, but the product just keeps getting worse.
