Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead with a huge parade
More than a million people watched as colorful floats and costumed people marched through Mexico City during a massive Day of the Dead parade on Saturday, according to city officials.
Mexico started celebrating the Day of the Dead on Friday with illuminated bones, skulls and sweets to remember their departed relatives on the two Catholic holidays of All Saints and All Souls on November 1 and 2.
Saturday’s parade of seven floats drew at least 10,000 people in fancy dress, according to city officials.
The parade, which runs along an 8-kilometer route from Chapultepec park to Zócalo square, was established by the city in 2016.
The UN cultural organization UNESCO has included the culture in its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This celebration is considered to be a combination of pre-colonial traditions and Catholic holidays that started in the 16th century. The festival also coincides with the end of the harvest.
