OpenAI is reportedly planning to release its Orion AI model in December

OpenAI is reportedly planning to release its next AI model, called Orion within the company, in December of this year, The Verge reported on Thursday. Unlike previous releases, the company is reportedly planning to release the model gradually to trusted partners before a wider release via ChatGPT.

An OpenAI spokesperson tells TechCrunch that the report is inaccurate but would not elaborate.

The Verge writes that Microsoft developers expect to get access to Orion in early November, although it is unclear what OpenAI will end up calling the model. The o1 series of models was named “strawberry” within OpenAI months before it was released.

A lot is riding on the release of the next OpenAI model. The AI startup recently raised $6.6 billion in funding at a $157 billion valuation, and investors expect OpenAI to continue releasing powerful models to lead the tech world.
