Danielle Fishel Didn’t Tell Her Two Sons She Had Breast Cancer

Danielle Fishel opens up about her decision to withhold her breast cancer diagnosis from her sons.

I Boy Meets World alum, who shares Adler, 5, and Keaton, 3, with her husband Jensen Karphe said he could not bear the thought of his children worrying that he would die.

“It was hard for me to tell my husband,” Fishel explained on the Sunday, October 20, episode of the “Amy & TJ” podcast hosted by. Amy Robach again TJ Holmes. “Both his parents passed. Her mother passed away in 2022 from lung cancer and she lived with us while she was undergoing chemo and her cancer treatment. My oldest son Adler was 3 years old when he passed and was very close to him.”

“One of the things that worried me the most was that he used to ask, ‘Where is Grandma going? Why is Grandma gone?’ “What worried me the most is that if we tell him that he was sick, he will think that he is going to die,” explained Fishel. “Even if mom or dad gets sick in the future, you will think that we will die. So I wanted to be honest with him about the fact that he had cancer and that cancer doesn’t always mean death, but sometimes it does. It was the same for Grandma.”

Fishel said that when he was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ in July, he decided not to tell Adler and Keaton about his illness. The actor has undergone two lumpectomy procedures to successfully remove the cancer.

“So when I was diagnosed, my fear was that I am usually honest with my children but I cannot tell myself that I have cancer. I will not be able to deal with this that they will worry about me in that way,” said the actor. “So they don’t know I have cancer, but they know I have a boo-boo that I had surgically removed from my body and they had to treat me well. I told them I love our bear hugs and I love wrestling with you, but my boo-boo means I have to be gentle.”

Since recovering from her surgery, Fishel has been able to spend time with her boys, she said.

“When I was able to catch them and throw them, Adler stopped and said, ‘Mom, is your boo better?’ and I was so happy to tell him that, yes, my boo-boo was better,” she said.

Fishel announced his diagnosis during an August episode of his podcast, “Pod Meets World,” which he previously covered Boy Meets World costars Is Fridle again A Strong Rider.

“I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a type of breast cancer,” said Fishel at the time. “It’s very early, indeed. Technically it is stage zero. To clarify, because I always like more information, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with microinvasion.”
