6 Best Hotels in Melbourne

Melbourne is my favorite city in Australia. It’s a vibrant, multicultural city known for its rich arts scene, world-class dining, and lively atmosphere. It is a hub for backpackers and travelers as well.

The mix of old world architecture and modern buildings gives the city a unique charm. I love walking around the iconic streets of Melbourne, enjoying the colorful street art and going into hidden alleys.

There is so much to do here that you can easily spend a week and not get bored. No matter how long you have, choosing a good hotel is important. There are a lot of hotels in the city, and not all of them are good. In fact, I’ve lived in some of the worst!

So, to help you make the most of your visit below, here is my list of the best hotels in Melbourne:

1. Treasurer to Collins

This four-star apartment is in the city’s CBD (central business district; an area in Melbourne I recommend to many travelers). The building itself is a landmark of the 19th century, and I think the hotel has done an excellent job of preserving its character while updating the space, with high ceilings and lavish details like pointed crown molding in all public areas. The hotel has a fitness center, and I love the complimentary happy hour they host every evening. It’s a nice touch. The daily breakfast buffet is also complimentary and includes your standard fare: a selection of hot dishes, pastries, cereals, and fresh fruit.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with large windows that let in lots of natural light. I love simple yet sophisticated design, with neutral tones and quality materials. Suites have a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave, and Nespresso coffee machine, while full apartments also have a kitchenette and dishwasher. All rooms have a washer/dryer, large TV with Netflix, and a good size work desk (something I always appreciate). Bathrooms are modern and clean, with walk-in showers, premium toiletries, and soft towels. Overall, this is a great choice for travelers who want access to a kitchen in a centrally located hotel.

2. Hotel Victoria

This historic, three-star hotel in the heart of the city was founded in 1880. I love its traditional design, with its elegant entrance and Art Deco decoration throughout the lobby and restaurant (which serves breakfast as well as lunch and dinner). The hotel offers basic but useful amenities, including a fitness center, heated pool, and sauna.

The rooms are simple but comfortable, with a minimalist design that maximizes space. Rooms vary in size but generally offer the respectability of a city hotel, with large windows providing natural light. As a solo traveler, I especially like that there are single rooms, a great option for budget travelers who want more privacy than staying in a hostel dorm. Each room includes basic amenities such as a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, a mini-fridge, and a small work area. The bathrooms are clean and functional, with a walk-in shower or a combined shower and tub. I think this is the best option for travelers looking for a comfortable and budget-friendly accommodation in the heart of the city.

3. W Melbourne

I love this five star place. It has a bright design and a lively atmosphere. The hotel has sleek, modern interiors with funky art and neon lighting. It’s full of amenities, too, including a heated rooftop pool open 24/7, a large, high-tech fitness center, and a spa. There are plenty of dining options too, from a stylish cocktail bar to an upscale restaurant serving creative dishes. The breakfast offers a variety of options, from fresh pastries and fruit to more hot food, all in good condition.

The rooms here are spacious and modern, with a stunning, stylish design. There are large, comfortable beds, large flat-screen TVs with streaming, desks, bottled water, and stocked minibars. I love the floor to ceiling windows as they provide lots of natural light. The black marble bathrooms are sleek and luxurious, with large walk-in showers, lighted mirrors, high-quality toiletries, plenty of counter space, and even heated toilet seats! If you’re looking for a unique, classy experience in the CBD, stay here.

4. Quest St. Kilda Bayside

This four-star hotel is just minutes from St. Kilda Beach, one of my favorite places in town. The hotel has a modern, minimalist design and offers a relaxed atmosphere. Facilities include a small outdoor swimming pool, BBQ facilities, a gym, and secure parking on site. Although there is no restaurant on site, each apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby for breakfast and other meals.

Spacious apartments have separate living and dining areas, and full kitchens with stove, microwave, mini-fridge, toaster, and tea/coffee maker. Rooms also have washer/dryers and smart TVs. The bathrooms are clean and functional, with walk-in showers with excellent water pressure, and nice complementary toilets. All in all, the apartments offer a home-like feel with all the essential amenities for a long stay in the vibrant city center.

5. The Langham Hotel

This five-star luxury property is located along the Yarra River in the heart of Southbank. I love the incredible beauty here, from the marble door to the chandeliers and luxurious furnishings. You can expect top-notch amenities here as well, including a pool in a beautiful atrium, a well-equipped fitness center with sauna and steam room, and a spa known for its unique treatments. The hotel restaurant offers a high buffet, and although it is expensive, it is worth trying, even if just for breakfast. It’s luxurious and includes an array of baked goods, an eggs station where you can get benedicts or omelets, and other hot dishes like brioche French toast and waffles.

The spacious rooms have a classic, luxurious feel, with large windows offering stunning views of the city skyline or river. Rooms come with plush bedding, a 55” smart TV, a mini bar, and a work desk. Bathrooms are equally upscale, offering marble finishes, deep soaking tubs, walk-in showers with good water pressure, high-quality toiletries, complimentary toiletries, and slippers. If you are looking for a swimming pool, this is it!

6. Ovolo South Yarra

I love the unique and colorful design of this four star hotel. Very retro chic, full of pop art on the walls and funky furniture everywhere. The lobby and common areas are bright and inviting, making it a fun place to socialize. The hotel offers several amenities, including a gym open 24/7 and self-service laundry facilities. There are also fun and unique touches like the candy station by the elevators (we have jars of gummies, jellybeans, and M&Ms). The on-site restaurant, Lona Misa, serves breakfast in the morning and plant-based cuisine with a Latin twist in the evening.

The rooms are compact yet stylish, with a design that has a 1970s feel thanks to the color palette and quirky decor. Despite the small size, the rooms are well organized and filled with natural light from the large windows. All rooms are soundproof and have blackout curtains and comfortable beds for a good night’s sleep. In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and a faucet with filtered water in the room (which I appreciate as it helps avoid single-use plastic bottles). Bathrooms are sleek and modern, featuring rain showers, high-quality toiletries, and fun tile designs. Overall, the rooms offer a comfortable yet unique experience, perfect for travelers looking for something different.

Melbourne has a laid back but cosmopolitan vibe that I just love. It has the perfect blend of modern attractions and historical charm, and there are plenty of things to see and do.
